Ukrainian Village Neighborhood Information
Location
Ukrainian Village is a unique neighborhood located on both sides of
Chicago Avenue. It is one of the most distinct areas of Chicago.
Combined with East Village, Wicker Park, Noble Square, and Eckhart Park,
Ukrainian Village makes up the West Town.
Community Info / History
Ukrainian Village was established by German, Polish, and primarily
Ukrainian immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Uniquely, this part of Chicago has managed to successfully preserve its
cultural heritage. The first Ukrainian residents were attracted to the
area by the Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1903. It has been the focal
point of the neighborhood ever since.
Nowadays, the community of the Ukrainian village is a lot more
culturally diverse than when the suburb was first formed. The cultural
heritage of this part of Chicago is still vivid through a great number
of Ukrainian businesses, churches, and social organizations. People of
various backgrounds enjoy Ukrainian cuisine, including pelmeni, pirogi,
and various baked goods.
Families and children are the majority of the community in the Ukrainian
village. The number of senior citizens is significantly smaller than
that of younger people.
With the Holy Trinity Church being the heart of Ukrainian Village, the
handmade mosaic over the entrance to the Sts. Volodymyr and Olga
Ukrainian Church is a point of pride for the town residents.
Ukrainian Village Real Estate
Real Estate is distinct in the Ukrainian village. Homes constructed by
William D. Kerfoot are the most desirable in the city because of a
combination of their convenience and Victorian-style exterior. These
buildings built between 1886 and 1950 based on Kerfoot's designs and by
his construction company, form about a third of housing in the Ukrainian
Village. One would rarely see any of these vintage houses listed for
sale. They are usually inherited from generation to generation or sold
within a closed circle of family friends and relatives if necessary.
Small cabins and apartments in red brick houses make up the other
two-thirds of the real estate. Ukrainian Village community is well known
for maintaining its historical buildings, streets, and backyards in
excellent condition. The Ukrainian Village has become an attractive
target for real estate in the recent years. The city's look is now
gradually changing because of the ongoing extensive renovations and
redevelopments. Modern architects are making an effort to construct new
houses while maintaining the general style of the Ukrainian Village.
Newly built houses are affordable and significantly less expensive than
those built in the Eastern part of West Town. Search for Ukrainian
Village Real Estate.
