Humboldt Park Neighborhood Information
Location
Located on Chicago's northwest side, the Humboldt Park community is an
area that is starting to become one of Chicago's trendy new areas.
Because of Humboldt Park's location and its spacious park, from which it
draws its name, it is slowly becoming prime real estate in Chicago.
Community Info / History
Humboldt Park is one Chicago's largest communities containing over
60,000 residents. Humboldt Park community was incorporated into the City
of Chicago in 1869, the same year that saw the creation of the 207 acre
park named after Alexander Von Humboldt. The area was settled largely by
immigrants of Polish, Italian and German descent. During the mid
seventies and eighties the demographics of the Humboldt Park
neighborhood changed to become largely Latino and African American, as
it remains today.
Humboldt Park is slowly becoming an up and coming community, and it has
a lot to offer new residents. Soon it will be as popular and trendy as
its neighboring communities.
Humboldt Park Real Estate
The homes in Humboldt Park still hold their late 1800's look. The area
is filled with old, large Victorian and Colonial homes and buildings.
Most look as though they have been barely changed from their early
inception. Some of the larger homes in the Humboldt Park area that had
been altered or dilapidated are now being renovated and restored to
their former glory. Most are being torn down, and new, more modern homes
are replacing them. The areas directly surrounding the Humboldt Park to
the north, west and east are primarily composed of multi-dwelling units.
There are some new, modern town homes and condominiums being built in
the area.
Because of the recent restoration efforts going on in Humboldt Park and
the revitalization of the neighboring Bucktown and Wicker Park
communities, housing prices in the area have started to rise. Most homes
in the Humboldt Park area range from $150,000 to $250,000.

Transportation
Public transportation in the neighborhood is plentiful. Humboldt Park is
supported by the Blue Line train and over 5 different bus routes. Public
parking is somewhat of a problem however. Many of the residential
streets are lined with resident's cars and there are very few garages.
Schools
The Humboldt Park Community also offers parents a host of options for
education. Several public elementary schools are located in the Humboldt
Park school district, such as: Ronald E. McNair, Brian Piccolo, West
Park Academy and Nobel Elementary. There are several other private,
religion based elementary schools. Humboldt Park is also serviced by
three public High Schools: Clemente, Orr and Westinghouse.
Nightlife / Entertainment / Restaurants
Humboldt Park has many entertainment options and restaurants in the
community. These establishments are comprised almost entirely of small,
neighborhood venues that showcase the diversity of its residents. The
area is largely made up of authentic Latino cuisine and entertainment
spots as well as soul food and rhythm and blues/jazz lounges. These
places are usually only frequented by its surrounding residents;
however, they are friendly and welcome all visitors. In talking to
residents you will get almost as many opinions about the best restaurant
or club as you will about the weather. There are plenty of places in
Humboldt Park for one to experience something new everyday. One can eat
authentic Mexican cuisine and dance the Chicago step (an
African-American dance) in a local lounge all on the same block.
Festivals / Parks
Humboldt Park, the park, with its man-made pond, Roman architecture
inspired recreation center and spacious park areas is one the largest
and most beautiful parks in the City of Chicago. |
