Community Info / History
In 1880 developer John Lewis Cochran purchased 76 acres of land on Lake
Michigan's shore to create a small town he named Edgewater. Within a
decade Cochran's town joined the city of Chicago.
Edgewater has been a part of Chicago for more than 100 years. For nearly
50 of those years the Edgewater community was synonymous with the
Edgewater Beach Hotel, a Miami style hotel built by two entrepreneurs
after a deal to buy the Chicago Cubs failed. The staff at this pink
stucco complex along Lake Michigan catered to the whims of out-of-town
celebrities like Bette Davis, Babe Ruth and Marilyn Monroe and treated
ordinary Chicagoans to music filled evenings on the beach. In the 1960s
the hotel was torn down and interest in the community waned, but it
never died. Thanks to strong civic and business leaders, the Edgewater
community's future is bright. Landmark status granted to significant
structures prohibits further teardowns. The local economy is strong due
to guidance given to entrepreneurs who are encouraged to locate
businesses in commercial areas.
